As Vice President, Business Development & Technology for Via, you will lead strategic growth initiatives at the intersection of intellectual property, emerging technologies, and global licensing programs. This executive will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and developing new patent pool opportunities, particularly in semiconductors (e.g., DRAM, NAND, HBM), artificial intelligence, and data center infrastructure.

The role combines external market engagement, technical evaluation, and commercial strategy, and will work closely with licensing, legal, and executive leadership to expand Via’s portfolio of programs and strengthen its position as a leading patent pool administrator. This hybrid role is required to work in the San Francisco office three days per week (Tuesday-Thursday).

Key Responsibilities

1. Business Development & Program Creation

  • Identify and prioritize new patent pool opportunities in high-growth technology sectors, including AI, memory, data center, and connectivity.
  • Develop and execute business cases for new licensing programs, including market sizing, stakeholder mapping, and revenue modeling.
  • Lead outreach to prospective licensors (patent owners) and strategic partners to build program participation and alignment.
  • Structure and negotiate framework terms for new pools in collaboration with legal and executive leadership.

2. Technology Strategy & Analysis

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and standards to determine “pool-worthiness,” including fragmentation of patent ownership, licensing inefficiencies, and industry adoption.
  • Oversee technical diligence processes, including patent landscape analysis and coordination with external experts.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into commercially actionable licensing strategies.
  • Stay ahead of trends in AI (including LLMs), semiconductor architectures (e.g., HBM vs. DDR), and data center systems.

3. Industry Engagement & Thought Leadership

  • Represent Via Licensing at industry conferences, standards bodies, and executive forums.
  • Build and maintain relationships with leading technology companies, patent holders, and ecosystem players.
  • Position Via as a thought leader in collaborative licensing, including AI-assisted licensing models and next-generation pool structures.

4. Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner closely with licensing, legal, finance, and operations teams to ensure seamless transition from program concept to launch.
  • Support ongoing programs by providing strategic input on market evolution and expansion opportunities.
  • Collaborate with AI/data teams to integrate advanced tools into patent evaluation, portfolio analysis, and royalty allocation processes.

5. Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to Via’s overall strategic roadmap, including expansion into new verticals and innovation in licensing models.
  • Evaluate competitive landscape, including alternative licensing platforms and bilateral licensing strategies.
  • Drive long-term growth initiatives aligned with industry shifts toward AI-driven infrastructure and compute-intensive applications.

Qualifications

Required

  • 12+ years of experience in business development, licensing, technology strategy, or related fields.
  • Deep familiarity with intellectual property, patent licensing, and/or patent pools (e.g., SEPs, FRAND frameworks).
  • Strong technical understanding of at least one of the following domains:
    • Semiconductor technologies (DRAM, NAND, HBM, controllers)
    • Artificial intelligence / machine learning systems
    • Data center architecture and infrastructure
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and lead complex, multi-stakeholder negotiations.
  • Executive presence with strong communication and presentation skills.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in engineering, computer science, or related technical field; JD or MBA is a plus.
  • Experience working with standards bodies (e.g., JEDEC, ONFI, IEEE) or industry consortia.
  • Familiarity with patent analytics, AI-assisted evaluation tools, or portfolio valuation methodologies.

The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $259,000 – 366,000 and can vary if outside of this location. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The Vice President, Finance & Operations will serve as a senior operational executive for Via, bringing financial discipline, scalable operating practices, technology leadership, and leadership capacity to a growing licensing pool administrator. The role will provide executive oversight across Finance, Accounting, Royalty Services, Tax Administration, IT, and ongoing process improvement, while partnering closely with the President and leadership team to strengthen operational resilience, business systems capability, and support business growth. 

The Vice President, Finance & Operations is a key member of the Via’s leadership team and is responsible for leading the operational infrastructure required to support the company’s continued growth and success. This leader will drive financial stewardship, operational scalability, IT and business systems leadership, process modernization, and organizational effectiveness while ensuring high standards of accuracy, compliance, service quality, security awareness, and business performance. 

As a leader of leaders, the VP will build and develop a high-performing management team, establish operating mechanisms that support scale, and serve as a strategic partner to the President in shaping the future operating model of the organization. This is a hybrid role and requires working in the Denver/Greenwood Village office three days per week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Key Responsibilities

Executive Leadership & Business Partnership 

  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to the President and executive leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Legal Strategy and Guidance

  • Develop and implement the company’s legal strategy related to patent pool formation and execution, aligning it with the overall business objectives.

      4. Licensing and Litigation

        • Identify unwilling licensees and collaborate with licensors to facilitate engagement leading to the execution of a pool license agreement.
        • Collaborate with licensors to develop patent enforcement strategies in jurisdictions throughout the world.
        • Manage patent enforcement activities in collaboration with patent pool licensors and affiliates.

        Qualifications and Skills

        • Degree from an accredited law school, along with active bar membership.

        The Head of IT role is based in Denver, Colorado. This senior leadership role is responsible for setting and executing Via’s technology strategy and leading the technical organization across software engineering, application architecture, cloud infrastructure, IT operations, end-user technology, contractors, vendors, and external technology partners. This leader will own the technical direction for Via’s internal and external technology platforms, including application modernization, scalable architecture, secure software delivery, data and integration strategy, infrastructure reliability, production support, and operational resilience.

        The ideal candidate is a hands-on, technically credible leader who can engage deeply with engineers, architects, infrastructure teams, security partners, and business stakeholders to design and deliver practical, scalable, and secure technology solutions. This role requires strong technical judgment, current knowledge of modern software development practices, cloud platforms, DevOps, system integrations, and enterprise architecture, along with the ability to build and mentor high-performing technical teams. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable shaping long-term technical strategy, reviewing architecture decisions, guiding engineering execution, troubleshooting complex issues, and communicating technology risks and tradeoffs to executive leaders.         • Exposure to AI-powered productivity and analytics tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Python-based analytics, or similar technologies) and a demonstrated interest in workflow automation.
        • Experience conducting market research, competitive intelligence, or commercial analysis.
        • Familiarity with data modeling, dashboard design, KPI development, and business performance tracking.
        • Interest in intellectual property licensing, technology markets, telecommunications, media, software, consumer electronics, or related industries.

        The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $74,000 – 96,000 and can vary if outside of this location. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
